Hugh Beattie's work is predominantly society portraiture of the pre-Great War years.
Hugh went to art college in Chelsea and graduated from the Camberwell College of Art. During his time at art college he joined the Territorial Army and began painting military works whilst on his first tour in Bosnia in 1996. In 2004 he studied at a studio in Florence where he developed a classical interest, which he now brings to his works.
Hugh wittily portrays his subjects, taking the more formal, restrictive Victorian elements out of traditional classic painting. He does however use traditional classical colours and techniques in his work. His portraits are started and finished from life using natural light, with canvases that he makes himself.
Hugh travels internationally to pursue his love of painting but when at home, he eagerly welcomes visitors to his busy studio in Fulham. He recently went to the Gulf to paint for the 7 Scots, a Territorial Infantry Company.
Most recently, his work was published in the March 2008 edition of Country Life magazine.
Hugh paints to commission but he does intend to exhibit a collection on nudes that he is currently working on in the near future.
