Since graduating from Falmouth College of Arts in 2003 London-Born painter Michael Sibley has been working from his Gloucestershire studio on a wide variety of landscape projects.
Reflecting on his travels and the places around him, Michael has built up a diverse portfolio of both urban cityscapes and rural landscapes.
Using acrylic, oils and inks, each piece is built up over time using an intense language of marks and repeating patterns. Michael frequently draws his subjects in thread, embroidering the canvas with gold or black before fusing the strands onto the surface with a rich glaze of colour varnish.
Michael’s painting focus beyond the external to his emotional response to the place. Drawing from photographs, sketches and memories, be disassembles his subject before weaving them back together into a cohesive wholes. Whether it be the ethereal beauty of the Swiss Alps or the monochrome bleakness of Romanian city life, each painting has its own story to tell.
