Born in London, raised in Devon and taught in Florence, Emily Rhind has traversed several media, as well as countries. Although her foray into the world of sculpture is relatively recent, her understanding of the craft runs extremely deep. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Rodin and Sargent, Emily manages to create accurate yet thoroughly artistic works. She works with live models both to ensure her portrait sculptures are of correct proportion and to maintain the character of the subject. The daughter of an architect, Emily clearly bears an innate interest in underlying structure, and this interest manifests itself in her art. Her understanding of anatomy allows her to create wholly lifelike sculptures whilst also capturing her subjects’ individuality.
“I prefer doing portraits because I love the feeling of creating a life size structure of bones, muscle, flesh, hair and expression. Also I feel that a portrait is where you find most of the soul of a person, every small expression, every facial movement lights up a face.”
