Jonathan Darby Artist

Born in Tel-Aviv and raised in London, John Darby's education would prove to be just as varied as his countries of residence. Expelled from a Rudolph Steiner School, he received an unconditional place to study at Central St Martins.

It was his work exhibited at his degree show that brought him the critical acclaim that has seen his stock rise rapidly. His work serves as a comment on consumerism, whilst remaining as aesthetic as the adverts it derides. Besides the obvious allusions to urban artists such as Banksy and Blek le Rat, Jonathan also draws inspiration from the likes of Cathe Kollwitz. His work "The Prisoners" is a homage to the aforementioned artist, inspired by her work of the same name.

"I have been looking at the phenomena of how brands and their visual aspects are taking over public space; leaving us less and less choice about what surrounds us.

"The power of brands seduces society and sucks and blinds with the pull of the plastic pop culture that supports this takeover and is becoming inescapable in modern day society."
