Contemporary Artist Sophie Morgan

Five years ago on the night of receiving her A level results, Sophie had a car accident which left her paralysed and wheelchair-bound indefinitely. Though a keen art student at Gordonstoun School in Scotland, Sophie had decided to study law at university. However after the life-changing event, Sophie left hospital and decided to follow her heart into the art world.

Sophie completed her foundation year at Brighton College of Art in 2004 and received an unconditional offer to join the Fine Art degree course at Goldsmith Art College in London. Now aged 23, she lives and studies in London.

At the beginning of a promising career, Sophie is developing a signature style that contains an emerging leitmotif representing the female body, drawing from both Frida Kahlo and Tracey

Emin. Never far from the surface, however, are the profound and highly personal challenges Sophie faces while coming to terms with her paralysis. Her work reflects the struggle faced by a young woman both coming to terms with disability and fully exploiting the opportunities of her youth. In often disturbing and brazenly challenging forms, Sophie invites the viewer to share something of her experience.
